Description
See also: Modeling Nitrogen in the Elkhorn Watershed, Polluted RunoffThis workshop was presented by nutrient cycling experts from the Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET). They presented the latest on the ArcView GIS-linked biogeochemical model to guide nutrient management decisions in the Elkhorn Slough watershed. The model provides spatially explicit simulations of biogeochemical processes that control nutrient cycling and subsequent trace gas and nutrient releases to air and water. Presenters included Dr. William Salas (Applied Geosolutions), and Dr. Changsheng Li, Steve Boles, and Mike Routhier (University of New Hampshire). This event is a follow-up to a workshop held in May 2003. In that workshop, the presenters introduced the decision-support tool, ES-DNDC (Elkhorn Slough - Denitrification-Decomposition). This year, they provided an update on improvements to the user interface and refinements to the model, and detailed training on installing and using ES-DNDC to assess management alternatives. Participants left the workshop with their own copy of ES-DNDC and had the opportunity to continue improving the model by contributing data and aiding in ongoing validation activities. The main audience of the workshop was people actively engaged in research on nutrient management.
