The Elkhorn Slough Coastal Training Program announced the California Red-Legged Frog Workshop, April 14, 2011 from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.  The workshop consisted of classroom lectures complimented by an afternoon field component.  Intended audiences included:  biological consultants, land managers, researchers, and regulatory agency personnel.

Workshop registration also included attendance at one of two night time field training sessions on the evenings of either April 13 or April 14.  More information on those field training sessions can be found on the Coastal Training Program website.

Workshop Objectives:

This was a great opportunity to receive training in species identification, field sampling techniques, and the habitat requirements of the California red-legged frog (CRLF). Workshop information will be useful for conservation planning and for educational outreach to agricultural producers and others who are considering projects that may impact CRLF. It also provided foundational knowledge for monitoring projects where potential impacts to CRLF have been identified.  * Regulatory and permitting information was not presented in this workshop.

 Workshop Format:

April 14th Workshop  Morning Session (8:00am-2:00pm) - Classroom: Overview of biology and management of the California red-legged frog. Meet at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Afternoon Session (2:00pm-6:00pm) - Field Trip to areas on the North Coast of Santa Cruz County: Habitat requirements, corridors, pond designs, metapopulations dynamics, and survey techniques. Personal vehicles required to travel to field sites.

 -----

Evening Field Practicum (either April 13 or April 14, 2011, 8:00pm-midnight) - Registration included attendance at one of the two field training sessions on.  In order to reduce teacher:student ratio,  each session was limited to 12 participants.  These sessions were at the Granite Rock Sand Quarry, just north of the City of Santa Cruz on Highway 1.  Instructors will demonstrate capturing, handling, sexing, and measuring of adult frogs and PIT tagging techniques
